MSCTY x Urawa
Taking sonic stencils of the city and seeing what we find.
Overview
Sounds + Textures of Urawa
Those little parts that spring of the urban landscape that we see every day. What do they sound like? What would they say if we were to take a sonic stencil of their character?
With this in mind, we set out on a little journey around the southern Saitama city of Urawa [a place rightly famous for it's delicious eel], with a map covering 9 locations: walls, ornamental statues, a functional huge pole, and that kind of thing.
At the sites, armed with the usual diverse array of microphones, we performed the chosen objects - scraping, banging, rubbing, and enjoying the ambience around them through their eyes.
Toshiki Hirano then 3D printed all 9 objects and they stood alongside the recordings at Urawa Citizen's Day 2023, providing an interactive way for the town's denizens to see their environment in a new way.
